More About Cuba
In October 1965, Cuban ruler Fidel Castro entered office and introduced Socialism into his country. The country then fell victim to a corrupted economy and suffered from lack of freedom of expression and travel. Cuba also had an affiliation with the Soviet Union, which caused the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 when the Soviets placed missile bases on Cuban soil. In 1991 the Cuban economy crashed and caused a shortage in supplies such as food and fuel. It wasn’t until 1993 that Cuba accepted any aid from America. In 2008, Fidel Castro’s place was passed onto his brother Raul, who pledged to remove some of the restrictions of freedom placed on Cuba’s citizens. Later in 2009 the U.S planned to put an end to a lengthy 47-year ban on Cuban exports, however, it was delayed until Cuba properly conformed to the U.S requirements. In 2014 Cuba revoked the law that prevented citizens from leaving the country without a permit from the government and Americans were allowed to visit the country again. Barack Obama visited Cuba in 2016, making him the first U.S president since 1928.
